The Course

Muirfield is the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the oldest golf club in the world, and the fairest championship links in Scotland. Two concentric loops — clockwise out, anticlockwise home — mean the wind never favours you twice.

Nothing is hidden. Every bunker is visible, every line is honest, and the ground gives back precisely what you put into it. Sixteen Opens have been decided here with almost no argument about luck.

Play is on the club's own visitor mornings, and never a certainty. We apply early, hold Gullane No.1 or North Berwick West in reserve, and build the day around the long lunch and afternoon foursomes that follow the round.

How access works

Getting on at Muirfield.

Four steps, quietly handled. You are never asked to enter a ballot, queue for a release, or negotiate with a club yourself.

  1. I

    Dates before anything else

Muirfield receives visitors on a handful of mornings each week in season. We start from your window and work backwards, usually twelve to eighteen months out.

  2. II

    The application, and an introduction

We apply to the Honourable Company on your behalf and, where it helps, arrange a member's introduction. Handicap records are submitted with the request, not on the morning.

  3. III

    An alternative always held

Until Muirfield is confirmed in writing, Gullane No.1 or North Berwick West is held for the same morning. You are never left without a round.

  4. IV

The day, in the old manner

Caddies, a room at Greywalls over the wall, lunch at the long table and afternoon foursomes — arranged as one day rather than a tee time.

Begin with a conversation

Nine to eighteen months' notice is ideal; shorter notice is often still possible.

Before you play

Muirfield — questions we are asked most.

Access, timing and the practicalities of arranging a round at Muirfield. If your question isn't here, the concierge will answer it directly.

Can Muirfield actually be arranged?

On the club's visitor days, and never as a certainty. The Honourable Company receives guests on limited mornings, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays in season. We apply well ahead and hold Gullane No.1 or North Berwick West as the alternative until Muirfield is confirmed in writing.

Is there a handicap or dress requirement?

A handicap of 18 (men) or 24 (ladies) or better is expected, with jacket and tie for the dining room. We collect certificates in advance and lay out the day's dress code before you travel.

What is lunch like at Muirfield?

A proper one — served at a long table, followed by foursomes in the afternoon in the old manner. It is as much the reason to go as the links itself, and we build the day to leave room for it.

How far ahead should we book Muirfield?

Nine to eighteen months for the summer months, and longer where a specific date matters. Visitor mornings are few and are largely committed a year or more ahead. We hold provisional dates while the rest of the week is built around the round.

Are caddies and clubs arranged for us?

Yes. A senior local caddie is booked per guest as a matter of course, and premium rental sets are placed in the car if you would rather not travel with your own. Clubs can also be shipped ahead and waiting in the pro shop.

Do you handle transfers and accommodation as well as the tee time?

Always. A round is never sold alone — the private car, the house you sleep in, the table booked for dinner and the pacing of the day are arranged together, so the golf sits inside a week rather than beside it.

What happens if the weather closes in?

Scottish links play in most weather, and the round usually goes ahead. Where a course closes, we move the tee time within the week or substitute a comparable links nearby, and any unrecoverable green fee is returned in full.
