The Course
Western Gailes runs as a single strip of duneland, the railway on one shoulder and the Firth of Clyde on the other. There is no return to the clubhouse at the ninth: you go out, you come back, and the wind decides which half is harder.
It is the members' course on this coast — the one Ayrshire regulars play when the Open rota is busy — and the lunch table is a proper part of the day rather than an afterthought.
We pair it with Troon or Prestwick in the same week, with a house on the coast, a caddie who has walked it for decades, and a car waiting at the last green.
The Gallery

"Out with the wind, home against it — and Arran on the horizon the whole way."
Where Western Gailes sits
Every week we build is bespoke, but these sample journeys show how Western Gailes is usually placed — the houses kept either side of it, and the pacing around the round.

Before you play
Access, timing and the practicalities of arranging a round at Western Gailes. If your question isn't here, the concierge will answer it directly.
It is a true out-and-back links on a narrow strip between the railway and the sea, with the wind on one cheek for nine holes and the other for nine more. Members regard the lunch afterwards as part of the round.
Nine to eighteen months for the summer months, and longer where a specific date matters. Visitor days are limited and set by the club's own calendar. We hold provisional dates while the rest of the week is built around the round.
Yes. A senior local caddie is booked per guest as a matter of course, and premium rental sets are placed in the car if you would rather not travel with your own. Clubs can also be shipped ahead and waiting in the pro shop.
Always. A round is never sold alone — the private car, the house you sleep in, the table booked for dinner and the pacing of the day are arranged together, so the golf sits inside a week rather than beside it.
Scottish links play in most weather, and the round usually goes ahead. Where a course closes, we move the tee time within the week or substitute a comparable links nearby, and any unrecoverable green fee is returned in full.
